Tim Oliver of WJ Oliver & Son is the fourth generation Oliver who has been farming in the South West area of Cornwall. His great grandfather Mr William John Oliver was a butcher and purchased Goon Rinsey Farm in 1912. The farm was then taken over by Tim’s grandfather Richard John Oliver in 1930 but as the butchery side declined due to conflict in Europe, the focus of the farm changed, concentrating on producing potatoes, cauliflower and cabbage whilst also keeping a dairy herd.
Following on from his father William John Oliver, Tim has continued to farm in the same manner as his grandfather and with the increased interest in Cornish produce, has built WJ Oliver & Son into a major supplier of potatoes, cauliflowers and winter cabbage to both the supermarket and catering trades.
Tim grew the first Juliette potatoes in Cornwall in 1997 and has been a potato grower ever since. Working closely with potato expert Peter Cocks, he has helped to develop and fine tune the growing guidelines for producing the best quality Juliette potatoes. Tim also grows the other two new potato varieties sold under the Potato Lovers brand - Anya and Maris Peer – both of which have their own strict and carefully controlled growing guidelines.
