Anya is a unique looking potato with a distinctive tubular thumb shape, a delicious rich flavour and a smooth firm flesh. Anya was specially bred on the banks of the river Tay just outside Dundee and is a result of a cross between the knobbly Pink Fur Apple and Desiree potatoes. Lord Sainsbury’s gardener grew the new variety for the first time in 1995, and liking it so much suggested that it be called Anya after Lady Sainsbury.
Anya is a favourite of Delia Smith being served in her restaurant and has also been featured in her “How to Cook Book 3”. Anya can also be found on the menus of some of the top restaurants in the country including “The Ivy”.
Only the right growers have been selected to grow Anya, in fields that have been carefully chosen. Years of trial and error have resulted in the Potato Lovers unique growing discipline and growers’ guidelines are issued for every aspect of cultivating Anya. Potato Lovers experts work closely with the growers throughout the growing cycle, monitoring the crop and ensuring that it is harvested only when it is perfect for eating.
The first of the new season’s Anya crop, from Cornwall, is available for harvesting in the second week of July with Suffolk, Norfolk and Lincolnshire coming on line shortly afterwards. They are available from store until the end of March.
Make a simple salad with cooked Anya dressed in a light French dressing served on a bed of curly endive and topped with a free range poached egg.
Or bake washed Anya in the oven for 30-40 minutes. Halfway through baking add some sweet chilli sauce and continue to cook until sticky and golden.
