Heston Blumenthal nominates Potato Lovers

Heston Blumenthal has nominated MBMG, suppliers of the Potato Lovers brand, as the greatest authority on chips in the BMW 1 Series Good Food Ride, a new guide to British eating in the United Kingdom.

MBMG has been selected as one of 101 venues included in the guide, all chosen because of the excellent food, aesthetic surroundings and social experience on offer. Each venue has been nominated for a different reason, examples include the best ice cream or best oyster, and we have been nominated as the greatest authority on chips.

Heston Blumenthal, whose celebrated, crunchy triple-cooked chips are widely recognised as the best in Britain, visited our Norfolk site for his forthcoming BBC2 TV series In Search Of Perfection. As a specialist potato supplier we conduct highly advanced scientific analyses of potatoes, which is what attracted Blumenthal, famous for his rigorous scientific approach to cooking.

"You might think a potato is just a potato," Blumenthal explains, "but it's not! A potato contains different elements, but basically there are two parts, water and solid stuff. When it comes to making chips, the higher the dry content is, the flourier the chip will be and the lower it is, the more waxy. If your potato has too much water, the chip won't be crisp. If it is too dry, it will go hard. So the amount of dry matter content is all important. MBMG test different varieties of potato to make sure that you've got the right one for the right job. They are great at what they do. We were in their lab last November filming, and I was discussing glucose or sucrose conversion. The cameraman burst out laughing, and said 'it's just a potato!', but it's not just a potato. They are all different."

The BMW Good Food Ride has been edited by the best-selling author of The Farm, Richard Benson and a team of food journalists and experts across the UK and Northern Ireland. The guide is to be launched mid-October and there will be a 4-page excerpt in October’s Observer Food Monthly. The guide will mainly be distributed through food shops and BMW outlets but will also be for sale on Amazon.
